Course objectives
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with a basic knowledge of the banking and insurance industry/sector generally and in the Czech Republic in particular. At the end of this course the student will be able to understand and explain the functioning of the financial and the banking system, the position and the role of the central bank, payment systems organization and tools, functioning and status of the banks, basic banking products, alternative corporate financing and basic principles of the investment banking. Syllabus
  • Contents of lectures: Lecture 1 The financial system and its functioning. Characteristics of the financial system and its functions. The structure of the financial system. Financial market and its segments. Money, capital and credit market. Financial system participants. Banks as a significant part of the financial system. Lecture 2 to 3: The banking system and its functioning. Banks and their main functions - financial intermediation, emission of non-cash money, non-cash payments processing. The status and role of the banks in the financial system; the banking system. Two-level banking system: the central bank and banks. Types of banks. Characteristics of the banking system in the Czech republic. Universal and specialized banks. Credit unions (savings and loan associations). Contemporary forms of implementation of the banking business in the Czech Republic and their characteristics (e-banking, home-banking, etc.) Lecture 4: The central bank. Position of the central bank in the banking system. The central bank functions - issuing, executive body of the monetary policy, the bank of banks, the bank of the state, the manager of international reserves. Tools applied by the central bank in the operation. The role of the central bank in the payment system and the foreign exchange market. The relative independence of the central bank. Banking regulation and supervision. Basic facts about the central bank in the Czech republic – the Czech national bank. Lecture 5 to 6: The payment system organization and tools. Characteristics of payment system and its forms. Cash and non-cash payments. Correspondent banks and correspondent accounts. Bank transfers and their breakdown. Cheques, their elements and types. Credit cards, their elements, types and benefits of their use. Documentary credit and documentary collection types, process, use, advantages and disadvantages. Lecture 7 to 8: Banking products. Concept. Classification of bank products. Deposit and loan products. Building savings. Bank bonds. Mortgage bonds. Bank drafts. Deposit insurance, its function and meaning. The structure of bank credit products. The credit agreement. Basic characteristics of particular types of commercial and consumer loans. Surety and its forms. Lecture 9 to 10 Alternative financing of businesses Characteristics of alternative forms of financing and its significance. Factoring - the nature and importance for financing. True and false factoring. Forfaiting - characteristics and importance for financing. Financial forfaiting. Project financing and its use for financing. Venture capital - characteristics and the use for financing. Financing through the capital market issuance activity. Possibilities and conditions of use in the Czech Republic and abroad. Basics of investment banking. Characteristics of investment banking and its significance. Basic types of banks investment transactions. Tools of investment - securities and their significance. Bank's services to investors in the securities. Bank's services to issuers of securities. Obligations of banks when conducting investment transactions. Lecture 11 and 12:Principles of insurance.

Teaching methods
Teaching takes the form of lectures and seminars for full-time studies and managed consultations in the combined form of study. Minimum mandatory attendance at seminars / workshops in full-time studies is 75%, the controlled group consultations in combined form 50%. Students who fail to meet the mandatory level of participation may be given during the semester additional study obligations (to the extent that will demonstrate academic achievement and acquired competencies necessary for successful completion of course).
Assessment methods
The exam will take place in the form of a written test of knowledge in the scope of the content of lectures usually by adding an oral exam. To obtain (for both forms of study) is necessary to write credit test with the fulfillment 60% correct answers.
