Course objectives
The aim of the course is regional-economic evaluation of structures and fundamental problems of Europe and the Czech Republic. Learning outcomes of the course unit The course will provide students with basic knowledge of socio-economic system and its formation in Europe and the Czech Republic. The lectures are focused on the theoretical background of the study of regional structure, classification, hierarchization and typology of European and Czech regions. After completing the course, students will be able to work with important concepts and problems of regions in a more comprehensive and broader context. The course also aims to provide students with comprehensive knowledge of regions in the Czech Republic and basic skills that can be used to assess and measure regional disparities in the Czech Republic. In the exercises students will perform their own regionalization of the selected area using various methods. The aim of the course is to prepare students for highly professional work of analysts in the public and private sectors, where complex regional analyzes or managerial work are expected, using European and Czech regional facts and contexts for decision-making processes.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, students will be able to work with important concepts and problems of regions in a more comprehensive and broader context. You will be able to characterize the main findings of the regional development of the Czech Republic and Europe with an emphasis on the academic concept of regional structures in the Czech Republic and Europe with a strong accent on the EU. You will also be able to characterize regional issues relevant to further regional development regional policy.
Syllabus
  • 1. Geographical position of the Czech Republic, geopolitical and geoeconomic position of the Czech Republic in Europe. Geographical, geopolitical and historical aspects of Czech statehood. 2. Geographical and geopolitical position of Europe, developmental nuclei and axes. 3. Hierarchy of spatial structures and problems (local to global) in Europe. 4. The issue of raw materials basics - dependence versus self-sufficiency. Power engineering in Europe and the Czech Republic. 5. Decisive environmental issues and problems in Europe and the Czech Republic. Examples of regulation mechanisms. 6. Demographic problems and migration flows in Europe and the Czech Republic. 7. Structural changes in the economy in Europe and the Czech Republic, demonstration of decisive trends. Restructuring of industrial structures in Europe and the Czech Republic. Old industrial regions. 8. Problems related to transport development in Europe and the Czech Republic (traffic flows and corridors, transnational networks, transport in agglomerations) 9. Problem regions in Europe - comparison, causes and problem solving. Problem regions in the Czech Republic, regions with concentrated state support. 10. Settlement of structures in Bohemia and Moravia, geographical and historical conditionality of settlement structures in the Czech Republic, settlement (concentration) areas and peripheral regions in the Czech Republic. 11. Territorial administrative division of the Czech Republic, historical development, current situation and links to territorial administrative units in the EU. 12. Regional disparities and their influence on spatial arrangement of socio-economic activities in the Czech Republic.

Teaching methods
Lectures and seminars in full-time study; tutorials in part-time study; compulsory seminar participation is 75% in full-time study, compulsory tutorial participation is 50% in part-time study. Students that aren´t present in the above dedicated number of lectures and seninars will receive and extra obligations with the objectif to show the knowledge of the course.
Assessment methods
The course is completed with a credit. Credit attests the accomplishment of the study obligations. To receive a credit is based on the written test where the students have to receive at least 60% of the points.
