The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide students with an overview of UNIX-type operating systems and work in the environment of these systems. Students will get to know the basic principles and philosophy of UNIX and its software. They will verify their knowledge while working with a specific Linux OS distribution within the framework of practical exercises.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course students will:
- have an overview of UNIX operating systems
- understand the basic principles and philosophy of UNIX systems
- be able to work with basic programs in UNIX-like systems

  • 1. History, philosophy and architecture of UNIX
  • 2. Familiarization with the desktop environment (KDE, Gnome)
  • 3. Introduction to console
  • 4. Input and output redirection
  • 5. File system
  • 6. Working with shell and text processing. Regular expressions.
  • 7. Sort and find commands
  • 8. Commands for system administration
  • 9. Text editors
  • 10.Creating custom scripts (programs)
  • 11.Administration and configuration of OS
  • 12.Repetition of key passages, conclusion

Teaching methods
Teaching takes place in the form of exercises and lectures in a full-time form of study; concentration in the combined form of study;
The minimum mandatory participation in classes is set at 75% in exercises in the full-time form of study and at 50% in the training sessions in the combined form of study.
Assessment methods
The course ends with credit.
CREDIT: is awarded for presenting knowledge of 1 selected topic in the selected UNIX/LINUX OS distribution (topics will be listed in MS TEAMS). The presentation will be recorded in MS Teams (min. 7 minutes).
At the same time, the granting of credit is tied to the fulfillment of the obligation of active attendance (min. 75 % in full-time form and min. 50 % in combined form).
