Course objectives
During the study, students will get acquainted with the subject and methods of socio-economic and administrative geography. This study allows to understand the development, current state and main trends in the distribution of the economy and other socio-economic activities of man at different regional levels. At the same time, it is about gaining the necessary basics of geographical thinking, ie. understanding of problems in the territorial context and understanding of the laws and regularities of development. The connection to the issues of regional development, regional policy and development management of municipalities, cities and regions is emphasized. Students will understand the position and role of socio-economic and administrative geography in the characteristics of the territory, regional analyzes and in the context of local and regional development. They will learn the basics of individual branches of geography and selected economic-geographical and regional economic theories and their use in regional development and public administration. Selected knowledge and practical experience with some partial economic-geographical phenomena and procedures will also be important, especially those that play an important role in regional policy, regional development and urban and regional development management.
Learning outcomes
Students will understand the position and role of socio-economic and administrative geography in the characteristics of the territory, regional analyzes and in the context of local and regional development. They will learn the basics of individual branches of geography and selected economic-geographical and regional economic theories and their use in regional development and public administration. Selected knowledge and practical experience with some partial economic-geographical phenomena and procedures will also be important, especially those that play an important role in regional policy, regional development and urban and regional development management. Upon successful completion, students will be able to: - work with laws and contexts in a real socio-economic system, including the interaction between nature, society and economic processes - use the acquired knowledge in the field of political geography, geography of population and settlements, economic geography, including the current image of the countries of the world and significant integration efforts - use elementary research methods and techniques of socio-economic geography in the study of other related subjects - explain the position of the Czech Republic in the current world economy - explain the basic regional distribution of sectors of the national economy (agriculture, industry, services) in the Czech Republic - describe the basic integration groupings in Europe - explain the basic integration and disintegration processes in developing parts of the world

  • 1. Introduction to socio-economic geography and regional economics Selected geographical terms, definitions. Socio-economic geography and regional development. Geographical regularities and regularities. 2. Development and present of the political map of the world The state as a part of the object of study of socio-economic and political geography. Basic characteristics and features of the state. Basic forms of the state and their distribution. Classification of world states. Classification criteria. 3. Theory of the region Development of views on the concept of the region. Region structure-homogeneous and heterogeneous region. Order and hierarchy of regions. Borders of regions. Regionalization. Typology of regions, economic region, political and administrative region. 4. Regional theory Localization theory (von Thünen, Weber, Isard, modern approaches to localization, Launhardt's triangle, localization factors, internal savings, savings from localization savings from urbanization) Innovation diffusion theory. New economic geography. 5. Geography of settlements Structure and basic components of settlement. Development of settlement structure, influence of socioeconomic and natural conditions on the formation of settlements. Classification of municipalities. Rural and temporary settlements. Origin and development of cities, functions of cities. Creation of spatial settlement systems. Agglomerations, conurbations and megalopolises. 6. Population geography - Population structure Spatial differentiation of population and general characteristics of territorial concentration of population, spatial features of population and migration, development of world population and its some structural manifestations. Population movement. Population distribution 7. Geography of agriculture Natural and socioeconomic factors of agriculture Regularities of spatial organization of agriculture. 8. Geography of industry Spatial economics of industry localization Localization factors of industry. Industry breakdown Methods of industry evaluation in the territory Industry overview. Industry 4.0. 9. Geography of transport Basic concepts and methods of transport geography Geography of the transport industry Evaluation of the equipment of settlements by public transport 10. Teaching methods
Lectures and seminars in full-time study; tutorials in part-time study; compulsory seminar participation is 75% in full-time study, compulsory tutorial participation is 50% in part-time study. Students that aren´t present in the above dedicated number of lectures and seninars will receive and extra obligations with the objectif to show the knowledge of the course.
Assessment methods
The course is completed with a credit and verbal exam. A specific written study (50% points min) id part-time study and presentation in full time study is required to award the credit. Answer oral questions correctly is required to pass the exam.
