Prerequisites
Elementary knowledge of selected macroeconomic and microeconomic theories and general regional policy from the bachelor's study is assumed.

The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
The course focuses on theoretical approaches to key issues of regional development, especially in terms of its economic components. The interpretation of these approaches is based on basic knowledge of the main directions of economic thinking. The aim of the course is to provide students with a deeper theoretical knowledge of regional development.
Learning outcomes
The student will gain new knowledge necessary for critical evaluation of regional development processes and spatial organization of the economy.
Syllabus
  • 1. Socio-economic concept of space - historical view, philosophical background, general paradigms of scientific methodology in relation to the topic of regional development, basic approaches to the interpretation of a given conceptual category in an economic context. 2. Overview of interdisciplinary theories of regional development (Weber, Isard, Bunge, Chorley, Chishholm and others), comparison of their constitutional elements. 3. Evaluation of the most economically important theoretical approaches to spatial analysis. 4. Development of settlement structure in terms of economic organization of space. Theory concerning the economic aspects of land use. 5. The contribution of localization theories to economic thinking and decision making. 6. Neoclassical and neoliberal conception of spatial economic analysis. 7. Approach to spatial analysis in Keynesian economics. Export base theory. 8. Polarized and cumulative regional growth. Theory of cumulative causes and the theory of growth poles. 9. Theory of regional innovation system (P.Cooke, M.Porter and other authors). Spatial components of institutional economics. "A New Theory of Growth" (Romer, Bröcker, Krugman and others). 10. Theory of global production networks (P.Dickey, N.M.Coe and other authors). 11. Analysis of the "input - output" type in a regional sense. 12. The concept of local economic development. Regional components of development studies (Development Studies) - theoretical interpretation.
Teaching methods
Teaching takes place in the form of lectures and seminars in the full-time form of study and in the form of guided group consultations in the combined form of study. In the combined form of study, the subject is taught by distance learning. Extent of compulsory participation in teaching: The minimum compulsory participation in the seminar in the full-time form of study is 75%, in guided group consultations in the combined form of study 50%. Students who do not meet the mandatory scope of participation may be assigned additional study obligations during the semester (to the extent that will allow to prove study results and acquired competencies necessary for successful completion of the course).

The course ends with an exam and credit.
