One of these is the right to start a family of their own. Current legislation is underpinned by heteronormativity and a traditional definition of procreation. Assisted reproductive technology and in vitro fertilization are legal only for heteronormative but not necessarily married couples. As a result, lesbian and single heterosexual women can bypass this requirement with the assistance of a male friend (the paperwork is not legally binding). Similarly, queer couples in registered partnerships (civil unions only available for nonheterosexual citizens) cannot adopt a child as a couple (although it is possible for a single queer person to adopt). Public opinion surveys suggest that Czechs are open to allowing queer people in registered partnerships to adopt children that are part of the family (whether born in the family or a previous one), but such a change does not have political support yet.
