The roots of the Slavic round dance reach deep into ancient times and are imbued with magical meanings, once closely tied to beliefs in the eternal return of life and rural fertility rituals. Over the centuries, the form of the dance evolved, becoming an inseparable symbol of local identities in which it has endured to this day. The village of Postřekov represents an exceptional example of the resilience of this tradition—the local community, the westernmost Slavic enclave preserving this archaic dance, not only keeps it alive but assigns it a central role during annual celebrations such as Masopust and the St. James Pilgrimage. The dance, locally known as Kolečko, sets the rhythm and dynamic of the entire festivity. The lecture offers a scholarly perspective that respectfully and thoughtfully analyzes the persistence of this ancient custom. Although the phenomenon of the round dance remains vibrant throughout the Chodsko region, it is in Postřekov that one can observe its most authentic form and its deep connection with the community, which has protected it for generations as part of its cultural DNA.
