Kapitola analyzuje dvě podoby od sebe velmi odlišné kolektivního stravování, spojené se smutečními událostmi: “utěšovací hostinu“ a pohřební hostinu. Hostiny jsou mechanismy, jejichž prostřednictvím jsou odstraňovány typické tabuizace, spojené se stavem smutku, aniž by byli pozůstalí povinni přijmout odpovědnost za jejich odstranění. Kapitola rekonstruje hlavní etapy vývoje pohřební hostiny v Evropě od antiky až po současnost. Zvlaštní pozornost je věnována vývoji pohřební hostiny v českých zemích.

The chapter analyzes the two forms of collective dining, very different from each other, associated with the mourning events: the "consolation feast" and a the funeral feast. The feasts are the mechanisms through are removed the typically taboo associated with the state of mourning, mourners without being obliged to take responsibility for their removal. Chapter reconstructs the main stages of the development of funeral feasts in Europe from antiquity to the present. Special attention is devoted to the development of funeral feasts in the Czech lands.
