Hlučín region is a part of the Czech Republic with a most moving past. Given its location, it is situated in the part of the Moravian-Silesian Region, Opava District. During several generations in the course of the 20th century, the national identity of Hlučinsko population was exposed to dramatic pressures and changes as a results of the cross-border location. Hlučínsko region and its population represent a relatively distinguishable community of people with their own subculture and mechanisms of internal social control of its members contributing to permanent reproduction of their uniqueness. The present Hlučinsko population is characterized by a relatively high level of stability; its demographic structure in comparison with CR population shows standard age-and-education-related split. To a certain extent, the relation of Hlučinsko population to the Czech state and culture is still defensive with a view to maintaining their own authenticity. It is mainly reflected in the critical evaluation of the past and the era of the so-called real socialism. The core of the spiritual culture of most Hlucinsko population lies in the faith in God embraced in the spirit of the Catholic Church and in the respect for traditions. Under the influence of general modernization processes, especially with younger generations, we may observe changes in the ways of thinking in terms of distinct pragmatism and rationality; hedonism and individualism emerge as characteristic features of modern way of life.
