Course objectives
The aim of the subject is to show and on the selected examples demonstrate questions which sociology dealing with deviant behavior and socio-pathological phenomena answers. Show range of problems whose solutions can contribute to the results of sociological research. Particular attention will therefore be paid to socialization, values ​​and norms, social pathology, social deviations, social contexts of corruption and crime in general. Sociology will also be presented as scientifically organized "way of thinking" resonating with the development company. Consequently it seeks to enhance students' interest in empirical social research, social changes and the roots of social problems using basic procedures, methods and techniques of social science research. Therefore they will be briefly explained the basic characteristics of types and methods of sociological research. On attractive examples from the past and present will demonstrate the ability solidly anchored in theory, sociological research to identify and explain phenomena and processes that resonate in "layman's" guided public and political debate.
Learning outcomes
Basic theoretical knowledge, orientation in problems and context of monitored topics. At the same time, the practical skills and skills of applying the acquired knowledge in a real environment of professional activities. The learning outcomes are the support and development of the profile of the educated practitioner.
Syllabus
  • In what kind of society we live in. From a layman's view of reality to the sociological perspective. Comparative view of the society. 2. When, how and why sociology established itself as a science? The link between the emergence of sociology and increase of social problems. 3. Basic sociological concepts I. Why sociology as a science needs to operate with defined terms? The society and the factors determining its basic characteristics, organizational processes, institutions and social roles, social relationships and links, social entities: the congregation, social complex and groups 4. The basic sociological concepts II: Society and Culture, a man as a biological and social being, values ​​and norms, the process of socialization, inheritance and social learning (nature vs. nurture), the extreme positions of belief in heredity. 5. Social control and deviance. Sociological meaning of "control" and "normality", varying degrees of deviation from the shared values ​​and norms: deviation, deviance, crime, organized crime, individual and social causes of deviance, varying degrees of adaptation stigma and stigmatization punishment and its signifikance. 6. Biological and social factors for the development of socially pathological phenomena - the bio-psycho-social model of human psychological characteristics of the individual delinquent. 7. Sociological approaches to social pathology I- theory of anomie, social disorganization theory and the theory of differential association. 8. Sociological approaches to social pathology II - subcultures theory, labeling theory, the theory of social control and conflicting theories. 9. Social contexts of corruption, approaches to detect levels of corruption, the relationship between corruption and distributive justice. 10. Sociological research, its main types and phases. What makes sociological research "good research"? When is it better to choose a qualitative research and what are its advantages over quantitative research ? When is it better to choose quantitative research and when its fails? Possibilities and limits of experimental research in the humanities. What is the relationship between theory, hypothesis and data. Types of withdrawals, the conditions for testing hypotheses and generalizations. 11. Questionnaire survey. Basic rules wording of questions and the design of the questionnaire. Classification and types of scales. Basic methods of data collection. Ethical rules for social research. 12. Basic principles and methods of data analysis, statistical hypothesis testing assumptions, elementary methods of hypothesis testing in quantitative research.
