Course objectives
At the end of this course the student will be able to understand and explain the   preparation and use of sociological research in   corporate and social practice. The course will help students understand, learn and then use   basic approaches to sociological research. The knowledge and skills will be utilized as part of the application processing undergraduate work and implementation of research investigations VSFS.
Syllabus
  • This plan is designed for students of full-time study. Content of lectures: 1. Sociological research The social science paradigms, ethihcs of social research, the links between theory and research, the logic of sociological research, the design and phases of research project. 2. Typology of sociological research The basic (theoretical) and applied research. Differences between quantitative and qualitatve methodology. Possibilities of sociological research application in the field economics, marketing etc. Requirements of the design of research project 3. Quantitative research I (2 lectures) Conceptualization, operationalization and measurment. Formulation of hypotheses. Defining variables and Attributes. 4. Quantitative research II Conceptualization, operationalization and measurment. Formulation of hypotheses. Defining variables and Attributes. Types of hypotheses and variables. 5. Techniques of data collection I (2 lectures) Survey methods. Guidelines for asking questions, construction of questionnaire. Types of interview. Comparasion between different survey methods. 6. Techniques of data collection II Observation, experiments,document analysis. 7. The logic of sampling Representativeness and probability os selection. Range of selection, sampling error. 8. Types of sampling designs Probability and nonprobability sampling. Simple random sampling, systematic sampling, stratified sampling, quota sampling, snowball sampling etc. 9. Quantitative data analysis I (2 lectures) Quantification of data - code categories, codebook, data entry. 10. Quantitative data analysis II Univariate analysis - distribution, central tendency, dispersion. Bivariate analysis - constructing and reading bivariate tables. 11. Qualitative field research I (2 lectures) Logic of qualitative research. Research ethics. Strenghts and Weaknesses of qualitative research. Qualitative interviewing, focus group, qualitative observation. 12. Qualitative field research II Qualitative data analysis, qualitative data processing. The complementarity of quantitative and qualitative research paradigm.

Teaching methods
Lectures and seminars in full-time study; tutorials in part-time study; compulsory seminar participation is 75% in full-time study, compulsory tutorial participation is 50% in part-time study.
Assessment methods
This course is finished by coure credit and exam. Course credit: preparing of project of sociological research, including the theoretical, methodological and organisational parts. Exam: Written exam/test based on knowledge acquired in the lectures and in the readings. The condition for the test log is to obtain credit.
