Course objectives
What is justice? Who defines criminal behavior? And how can we reduce the damage in society? Applicants for the "Criminology in Practice" course will seek answers to these questions. As a multidisciplinary field, criminology draws on information from a number of other fields, including sociology, psychology and law. Criminologists study crime, the criminal justice system, and society's response to the effects of criminal behavior. In this context, applicants will study current crime trends, issues related to crime prevention, criminalization and social control. The course will offer an insight into the functioning of the criminal justice system. Students will deal with complex relationships between victims and perpetrators of socially undesirable behavior. He will try to find out whether it is effective to punish the offender or to put more emphasis on the prevention of criminal activity, i.e. on prevention. Students will also deal with the sanctioning of criminals, prisons and penitentiary care. The course will also include a look at the history of crime, whether in the Czech Republic or abroad.
