- Course objectives
- Learning outcomes of the course unit The aim of the course is to acquire deeper theoretical knowledge about the city, the nature of origin, functions, geographical, economic and social development. Furthermore, the aim of the course is to approach the key differences between settlement structures in the global framework and in the context of economic, social and environmental contexts.
- Learning outcomes
- After completing the course, the student will be able to identify a city within the hierarchy of settlement structure and to distinguish individual types of urban settlements. Students will be able to identify and analyze the main causes and impacts of changes in the size and structure of urban areas in order to identify factors affecting the development of cities and urban areas. They will also be able to work with available statistics on cities and urban areas and to perform calculations for practical use.
- Syllabus
- 1 Introduction, definition of the city and urban settlement, the function of the city, the emergence of the first cities, historical context, the current legislative anchoring of the city in the country. 2. Czech and world settlement geography, selected theoretical approaches in urban development 3. Specifics of urban space in Central Europe and the Czech Republic and comparison between countries. Forms and classification of settlements, typology of urban settlements, urban space within the EU. Agglomeration, conurbation, megalopolis. 4. Settlement structures in developing countries and their specifics. 5. Formation of urban regions, urbanization, suburbanization, re-urbanization, desurbanization and other related concepts. Factors of settlement development. 6. Economic, social and environmental consequences of settlement development, current problems of urban areas, specifics of suburban zones. 7. "Ghetization" of cities, segregation within urban communities, causes and consequences, international comparison and specifics. 8. EU urban policy within individual programming periods and in the context of other EU policies. 9. Application of urban policy in the Czech Republic. 10. Transport services in urban areas. 11. ESPON - content, usage 12. Regeneration of urban cores - the most important Czech and foreign projects and their results

- Teaching methods
- Lectures and seminars in full-time study; tutorials in part-time study; compulsory seminar participation is 75% in full-time study, compulsory tutorial participation is 50% in part-time study. Students that aren´t present in the above dedicated number of lectures and seninars will receive and extra obligations with the objectif to show the knowledge of the course.
- Assessment methods
- The course is completed with a credit. Credit attests the accomplishment of the study obligations. To receive a credit is based on the written test where the students have to receive at least 60% of the points.
