- Course objectives
- The subject, functions and basic characteristic of the theory of science. Structure and principles of the theory of science. The subject and basic principles of methodology of science. The basic procedure of composing methodology of science. Relation of experience and theory in scientific knowledge. Basic logical procedures and their use in the process of scientific knowledge, specifying conceptual apparatus, defining concepts, logical consequences, logical qualities of theory (comprehensiveness, indisputability).
- Learning outcomes
- Upon completion of the course the doctoral student will know the basic principles of construction of scientific theory and especially their function for conception of real (empirical) research (relation between theory and empire, basic logical rules of the construction of scientific theory including experimental function, basic methods of working with terminology , knowledge, meaning - concepts, ways of defining the concept), will be familiar with the basic methods of scientific work characterized especially for social sciences (taking into account the specifics of economic research), including the individual methods and techniques of obtaining empirical data, their analysis and classification and how to draw more general conclusions (including verification of their validity).
- Syllabus
- • Forming opinions on scientific knowledge - cognitive sciences, drafting and principles of composing the theory of science, the structure of science, relation of theory of science and methodology of science, subject and basic concepts of methodology of science. • Historical aspects of development of theory and methodology of science, rationalism (Descartes) and empirism (Bacon F.) in the scientific knowledge, current approach to the methodology of science, signification and role of formalisation in science and its means. • Language of science - syntax and semantics of the language of science, logics of propositions, logical and factual truth, axiomatization and its methodological significance, completeness and indisputability of theories expressible in the logics of propositions. • Predicate logics of the first stage - deducing in the predicate logics, validity and feasibility - empiric way of confirmation, theory of evidence and proving, proof and confirmation, verification and falsification in science, inductive logics and its methodological significance. • Facts in science, theory and experience, hypothesis and theory, qualities of scientific theory, role of theory in the (empiric) research, explanation and prediction in science, problem of causality. • Specifics of methodology (and scientific knowledge) in social science (nomothetic and idiographic science), objectivism and ralativism in the socio-scientific knowledge, "fuzzy" terms and problem of exactness in social science.
