In the original language
In English
The Czech economy is already showing a high degree of readiness to adopt the euro, both in terms of nominal convergence (Maastricht criteria) and real convergence (economic level, alignment of economic cycles, price convergence is weaker for the time being). It is comparable to the Slovak economy at the time of its entry into the euro area. Although the financial crisis and economic recession complicate the fulfilment of the public finance deficit criterion, its evaluation will take place (depending on the nearest possible date for the adoption of the euro in 2013 or 2014) only in 2011 or 2012, when the impact of the recession will subside. An independent monetary policy is a dubious argument in favor of the national currency; since the beginning of 2010, the CNB has been taking over the ECB's inflation target. The euro gives the economy credibility from the point of view of investors, while the Czech koruna, although fundamentally healthy, is as unstable from their global point of view as the Polish or Hungarian currency. The financial crisis increases exchange rate volatility and increases the risk of a speculative attack on the currency of a small open economy. The financial crisis is therefore a challenge to strengthen efforts to join the euro area quickly.
