Course objectives
The aim is to acquaint the students with the key chapters of the European law. Emphasis is on the effective ammendment of Community Law. Besides the students are also introduced to the main regulations in the second and third pillar of the European Union. The course is based on the development and current state of the basic market freedoms in the context of the dynamic development of the institute of union citizenship. Attention will also be paid to the basic principles of competition law. The students will acquire a general overview of the substantive law of the EU and will be able to see the impact of these legal matters on the internal law of the member states including the Czech Republic.

  • 1. Sources of EU law (hierarchy and classification) 2. EU secondary legislation and the direct effect of EU law 3. Member State liability for damage caused by breach of EU law 4. The concept of the internal market and fundamental market freedoms 5. Free movement of goods 6. Free movement of persons 7. Citizenship of the European Union 8. Protection of fundamental rights of EU 9. EU anti-discrimination law 10. Migration Policy of the EU and the Schengen system 11. The Development of the Economic and Monetary Union 12. EU Competition Law

Teaching methods
Lectures and seminars in full-time study; tutorials in part-time study; compulsory seminar participation is 75% in full-time study, compulsory tutorial participation is 50% in part-time study.
Assessment methods
Exam consisting of written and oral part. Written part consists of open knowledge questions, topics for the oral part will be announced in the study materials.
