Course objectives
At the end of this course the student will be able to understand and explain the basic concepts and elements of European law. The students will have to clarify the practical relevance of EU law. They will also analyze the practical relevance of the case law issued by the Court of Justice of the EU, the European Court of Human Rights and national courts. Students will further gain an overview over the current debate on the future direction of European integration.
Syllabus
  • 1. Historical development of European integration - milestones, 2. The importance of the Lisbon Treaty - Constitutional Court jurisprudence, 3. The concept of international and supranational organizations, national sovereignty, 4. EU competence (subsidiarity, proportionality), 5. Specifics of EU law (direct effect, primacy), 6. Primary sources of EU, 7. European Court oj Justice (institutions, types of proceedings), 8. Secondary sources of EU, 9. The EU internal market (free movement of goods), 10. Internal market (people, services), 11. EU citizenship, 12. EU law and Czech law.

Teaching methods
Theoretical lectures and practical exercises. Students solve independently and working groups fictitious cases. Method inspired moot-court. Powerpoint presentation.
Assessment methods
Final written test - credit. Successful completion of the course is subject to 60% correct answers. Oral examination.
