Course objectives
The course Specifics of Family Business will point out the areas that are unique for the management of family businesses and family. The intention is to create preconditions for the development of students' managerial skills and motivation for possible participation in the intergenerational transfer of a family business. Students can set up own family business, can continue in the family business, look for a job in family businesses. So it is appropriate to introduce them to an environment in which the interaction of family, individual members, the business itself and asset management is a complex system with significant implications for conflict management through open communication. The basis of the family is the emotional aspect, belonging and communication inwards. The family company is based on concrete results, rational facts, substantiated information, is open to its business partners, customers, communicates communication outwards. The task of the family is mutual encouragement, help, tolerance and education. In the business, rivalry, making profits are more appreciated, and more than education, they focus on developing professional skills. These seemingly disparate variables must be in complete harmony in order to ensure the functioning of the family business and family, that form the basic specifics of the family business.
Learning outcomes
Course graduate: Gains the theoretical foundations of the specifics of the family business in the field of management and understand the importance of internal communication in resolving conflicts. Looks for examples of good practice in socially responsible behaviour of family businesses. They will realize the importance of building a brand of a family business and will design modern online communication tools for brand visibility in the market. Creates a succession strategy plan, or proposes the text of the family constitution. They will learn the basic rules of a successful presentation, will be able to compile and deliver a quality presentation to the audience, convincingly argue and defend the proposed project, gain experience in teamwork in creating a project. He will be able to combine knowledge and skills acquired through the study of other subjects, to perceive them in the context and context of the family business.

  • 3. Specifics of family business (socio-emotional wealth, risk aversion, long-term orientation, altruism, nepotism).

  • 5. Strategic management, parallel planning process, 3 cycle model.
  • 6. Internal communication and conflict management.
  • 7. External communication and brand management.
  • 8. Succession strategy I. - Analysis of preparedness, Processes associated with passing on to the emerging generation.
  • 9. Succession strategy II. – Post-succession process. Owner´s exit. Transgenerational transfer of ownership.

Teaching methods
Lectures will usually include a lecture part (theory, new knowledge, including practical examples) and a practical part (case study). Part of the lecture may be the completion of self-assessment questionnaires, discussion on the topic, group work, etc. It will include assignments for home preparation for the next lesson. Emphasis will be placed on exact thinking based on verified qualitative and quantitative data, on the ability to work with information, with trendy information and presentation systems. Family business management will be presented on a scientific basis as a sequence of interconnected projects and processes. Teaching in the combined study will take place in the form of a guided consultation, where in addition to a condensed presentation of the topic, the previous self-study is also assumed so that a subsequent consultation is possible. Teaching in the distance form of study will take place in the form of tutorials, ongoing consultations and elaboration of ongoing tasks, tests.
Assessment methods
The course ends with an EXAM (5 credits).
FULL-TIME STUDY: Participation in the exam is tied to the fulfilment of the obligation of active attendance min. 75% (ie not only the presence but active participation in the course of teaching, discussion, interaction, argumentation), the fulfillment of homework assignments. Preparation for course at home: case study, which will include the topics of the course (range of 10 pages, according to the topics of the course). EXAM - incl. seminar paper + oral exam (discussion about seminar paper). The student will present the results of the questionnaire survey and their own proposals and recommendations related to a particular family business, there will be a relevant discussion of the work.
COMBINED STUDY: Participation in the exam is tied to the fulfilment of the obligation of active attendance in min. 50% of guided consultations (but not only presence but active participation in the course of teaching, discussion, interaction, argumentation). Preparation for course at home: case study, which will include the topics of the course (range of 10 pages, according to the topics of the course). EXAM - incl. seminar paper + oral exam (discussion about seminar paper). The student will present the results of the questionnaire survey and their own proposals and recommendations related to a particular family business, there will be a relevant discussion of the work.
Students with customised study plan CSP (ISP): 1. Task for Students with customised study plan OR Preparation for course at home: case study, which will include the topics of the course (range of 10 pages, according to the topics of the course) – Always student´s folder indicate the name and UCO, must includ all Task for Students with customised study plan, 2. EXAM - incl. seminar paper + oral exam (discussion about seminar paper). The student will present the results of the questionnaire survey and their own proposals and recommendations related to a particular family business, there will be a relevant discussion of the work. You can have a exam paper at hand. Elaborate continuous tasks to be sent within one week of completion of the course. It is possible to send continuously in connection with a specific block of instruction. Without the completion of intermediate tasks for Students with customised study plan and Exam paper (questionnaire) and oral exam, the subject can not be successfully completed.
DISTANCE STUDY: EXAM is tied to participation in tutorials (not only attendance, but active participation during the tutorial, discussion, interaction, argumentation).
Students of all forms of teaching (full-time, part-time, distance) late attendance will not be accepted during the course and if the course is taught through Microsoft Teams, it is expected that the camera and microphone will be turned on when prompted by the tutor.
