The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
Objective of the course: The aim of this course is to introduce students thoroughly today's computer networks, their hardware and software solutions. After completing the course the student should master the design and management of medium sized networks including the evaluation of possible solutions.
Learning outcomes
After completion of the course the student should understand the basic principles of the operation of computer networks based on the OSI/ISO or TCP/IP model, the operation of individual computer network services based on protocols working on the individual layers, addressing in computer networks, network security etc.
Syllabus
  • This curriculum is designed for full-time study, part-time students will absolve several seminars containing cca 2 blocks together.
  • Content of lectures:
  • 1. Basic concepts, networks clasification
  • 2. Models ISO/OSI TCP/IP
  • 3. Data transmission in computer networks
  • 4. Physical layer of Ethernet
  • 5. Network architecture: Ethernet, token ring, ATM and others
  • 6. Link layer of Ethernet, networks interconnections
  • 7. Internet protocol (IPv4 and IPv6)
  • 8. File transfer protocols
  • 9. HTTP and mail in Internet (SMTP, POP3, IMAP)
  • 10. Security in computer networks(encryption, certificates)
  • 11. Protection and network management
  • 12. General repetition, final test

Teaching methods
Teaching takes the form lectures in full-time study form and seminars in part-time study form.
Assessment methods
The course is completed with a credit and an exam. The credit will be awarded on the base of completion several tasks during the term. The exam will be mostly written with the possibility of a short oral examination.
