Course objectives

The aim of the course is to provide students with an advanced understanding of the management, regulation and supervision of financial institutions, with particular emphasis on current developments in financial markets, risk management, systemic risk, and micro- and macroprudential approaches.


Students are expected to critically assess relevant academic literature and apply theoretical and empirical findings to selected issues related to the management and regulation of financial institutions. As part of the course requirements, students will prepare a critical analysis of a selected research article published in an impact-factor journal and present its main research question, methodology, findings and contribution. Students will also prepare a seminar paper (essay) on a selected topic related to the course.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • explain the role, functions and specific features of financial institutions in contemporary financial systems;
  • analyse key issues related to the management, regulation and supervision of financial institutions;
  • distinguish between microprudential and macroprudential approaches and assess issues related to systemic risk, procyclicality and financial stability;
  • critically evaluate relevant theoretical and empirical research in the field of financial institutions and financial regulation;
  • analyse a selected research article published in an impact-factor journal, including its research question, methodology, results and contribution;
  • formulate and discuss a selected research problem related to the course and present it in the form of a seminar paper using relevant academic literature.
Syllabus
The aim of the course is to discuss the development and current state of scientific knowledge in the field of management and regulation of financial institutions in advanced market economies. The course focuses on the role and importance of financial institutions in contemporary financial systems and on the specific features of their management, regulation and supervision, with particular emphasis on the European Union and the Czech Republic.


The course discusses relevant criteria, methods and decision-making techniques from both the perspective of financial institutions and that of regulatory and supervisory authorities. Particular attention is paid to current developments in financial regulation, risk management, micro- and macroprudential policy, systemic risk and financial stability. The course also develops students' skills in academic writing, critical evaluation of research literature and preparation of an academic seminar paper.


Course syllabus

  1. Definition and classification of financial institutions. Typology of financial institutions and their main functions.
  2. The role and importance of financial institutions in contemporary financial systems.
  3. Theory and management of financial institutions. Specific features of the management of large and small financial institutions.
  4. Contemporary challenges in financial institution management: globalization, financial innovation, digitalization, increasing market uncertainty and volatility, capital planning and risk management.
  5. Regulation and legal framework governing the management of financial institutions.
  6. Current trends and regulatory developments. EU regulatory initiatives and legislation, national and international regulatory frameworks, current policy discussions and emerging regulatory proposals.
  7. Microprudential and macroprudential analysis. Strategies, incentives and behaviour of financial institutions.
  8. Differences between microprudential and macroprudential approaches. Systemic risk, financial stability and the impact of financial and economic crises on risk management.
  9. Procyclicality of the financial system: definitions, theoretical foundations, empirical evidence, international policy discussions and instruments designed to mitigate procyclicality.
  10. Interactions between financial institutions and the real economy. The impact of deteriorating economic conditions on banks, credit supply, solvency, asset quality and non-performing loans, including adverse feedback loops between the financial sector and the real economy.
  11. Research literature on the management, regulation and supervision of financial institutions. Discussion and critical evaluation of selected theoretical and empirical studies.
  12. Presentation and discussion of topics and research approaches for final seminar papers.

Teaching methods
Class discussions, guided discussion of selected topics and academic literature, student presentations, and individual consultations as needed. E-mail communication is used for ongoing course-related communication.
Assessment methods
Assessment is based on two components: an in-class presentation and critical discussion of a selected research article published in an impact-factor journal, and a seminar paper (essay) on a selected topic related to the course, submitted after completion of the classes.
