Course objectives
The aim is to teach students the basics of the scientific approach to understanding social problems, preparation, implementation and evaluation of sociological research. Explain the basic differences between the common and scientific knowledge. Acquaint them with the development and site-specific scientific investigation of reality, to explain the basic methods of scientific work (induction, deduction, analysis, synthesis, etc.). Specifics of sociological research. The student will know the specific requirements for implementation of scientific research, its procedure, the main species and the basic stages of its implementation. Emphasis is placed on clarifying the role of hypotheses in scientific research, practice concept operationalization and measurement of social phenomena. In connection with this issue in the context of sociological practice is to learn the methods of sociological research to examine specific social problems in social practice, including the formation of conclusions and proposals.
Syllabus
First Theory and Methodology of Science. (brief development of science, the main stage, the function of science in society). Methodology of scientific knowledge, (clarification of concepts: ontology, epistemology, methodology, method, methodology) Second The main methods of scientific work (induction, deduction, analysis, synthesis, comparison, analogy, explanation, prediction, generalization) Third Relation between theory and empiricism in the process of scientific cognition 4th Scientific problem, scientific approach to the problem, a social problem (types of research according to the OECD, other structure, significance of the distinction types of scientific research) 5th The cumulative nature of knowledge, hypothesis, the types of hypothesis (verification, falsification) 6th Specifics sociological approach to social phenomena, quantitative and qualitative sociological research. 7th Phase sociological research (function and use of sociological research, applied research, terminology). Sociological research project and its elements 8th Operationalization and measurement in the social sciences (defining concepts, character and types of characters) 9th Methods and techniques for obtaining empirical data in sociological research. 10th The problem of generalization in sociological research (selection, monographic survey) 11th Data and process for their processing. 12th The basic procedures of data analysis in sociological research
