Course objectives
The penology course introduces students to the basic concepts of the scientific field of penology, the history of punishment and punishment. Students become familiar with the legislative anchoring of the treatment of convicted persons, not only those serving an unconditional prison sentence, but also those serving alternative punishments or protective measures. They will become familiar with the concept of penitentiary studies as a prison science. In this context, we will talk about prison facilities and their profiling, the Prison Service of the Czech Republic and its structure, the concept of prison and its humanization. We will deal with the stay in prison from the point of view of the rights and obligations of convicts, but also accused persons or persons placed in security detention. It also includes treatment programs, where differentiated treatment of certain groups of prisoners must also be taken into account. Attention will also be paid to the effects of negative influences in the scientific environment and the reintegration of convicts into society. Subsequently, we will also mention the issue of post-penitentiary care. In a broader perspective, we will also focus on alternative punishments and some procedural contexts.
