- The course is offered to students of any study field.
- Course objectives
- Student has good knowledge and orientation in demographic data sources and in the system of demographic indicators. Student is able to select and to use appropriate methods of demographic analyses. Student understands the principle causes and consequences of population development and its relationship to other social, economic and cultural processes in society. Student knows the population development in the Czech Republic and its perspectives in a near future.
- Syllabus
- 1. Demography: definition, objectives, and relations to other disciplines. Demographic events and processes. Sources of demographic data. Data collection and their processing.
- 2. Lexis diagram and the system of demographic indicators. Standardization: direct and indirect method.
- 3. Age structure as a basic characteristic of a population. Age structure indicators. Population pyramid as the reflection of the demographic past and starting point for the future demographic development. Gender statistics.
- 4. Demographic ageing: main characteristics, ageing from the bottom and from the top of age pyramid. Impact of demographic ageing on the population’s social and economic situation, challenges to social policy. Feminization of ageing.
- 5. Fertility: factors affecting fertility, indicators. Trends in childbearing. Changes in fertility characteristics during the second demographic transition. European fertility patterns.
- 6. Abortions: types, legislation, analysis, trends. Family planning. Contraceptive use related to reproductive health.
- 7. Mortality: determinants, trends and measurements. Life table and life table functions. Sex differences in mortality. Leading causes of death.
- 8. Family formation and nuptiality: marriage, cohabitation. Nuptiality: main characteristics, methods of measurement. Factors effecting nuptiality. Trends in nuptiality.
- 9. Dissolution of unions and divorces: sources of data, methods of measurement. Factors affecting intensity of divorces. Divorce law.
- 10. Characteristics of natural and total reproduction: components of population change and their interaction. Closed and open population. General trends in population growth (or decline) and their consequences.
- 11. Demographic forecasts: sources of data, principles and methods of elaboration. Concepts and quality of population forecasts. Trends in Population Growth Worldwide.

- Teaching methods
- Lectures and seminars in full-time study, tutorials in part-time study. Compulsory seminar participation is 75% in full-time study, compulsory tutorial participation is 50% in part-time study.

- The course is completed with a credit and presentation of a written study (the topic is given by the lecturer, extent of the study min. 6 pages of the written text + tables, graphics).
