Course objectives
The aim of the course Criminal Law 1 is to acquire basic theoretical knowledge of general and special parts of substantive criminal law and basic practical skills in the interpretation and application of criminal law. The course begins with the general part of substantive criminal law, which can be divided thematically into the issue of guilt (basics of criminal liability) and the issue of punishment (sanctioning). Students first acquire knowledge about the purpose and functions of criminal law and its basic principles. The teaching is aimed at understanding the essence and meaning of individual criminal law institutes and the correct perception of the sector within the whole legal system. Students gradually acquire a thorough knowledge of the sources of criminal law, the ways of their interpretation and the ability to accurately determine the scope of criminal laws. The current European and international context of criminal law is not neglected. The teaching is oriented towards a detailed interpretation of the problems of a criminal offence and its factual nature, including its individual features, circumstances precluding illegality, grounds for the termination of criminality (criminal liability) and the developmental stages of criminal activity. Increased attention is paid to two of the most complex problems of the general part of substantive criminal law - the problem of participation (or more broadly criminal cooperation) and the problem of multiplicity of offences (concurrence and recidivism). At the end of the course, attention is paid to the problem of sanctioning (imposing penalties and protective measures) of natural persons.

Successful passing of the exam from the subject.
