- Course objectives
- The aim of the subject is to familiarize with the content, functions and procedures of the theory and methodology of science. Emphasis is placed on basic procedures and their use in the processes of scientific knowledge and refinement of the conceptual apparatus. It also includes the issue of a systemic approach to scientific research, relevant application of data sources and a discussion of the mutual relationship between theory and empiricism.
- Learning outcomes
- Upon completion of the course the doctoral student will know the basic principles of construction of scientific theory and especially their function for conception of real (empirical) research (relation between theory and empire), basic logical rules of the construction of scientific theory including experimental function, basic methods of working with terminology , knowledge, meaning - concepts, ways of defining the concept), will be familiar with the basic methods of scientific work characterized especially for social sciences, taking into account the specifics of economic research. One will be able to apply the individual methods and techniques of obtaining empirical data, their analysis and classification and how to draw more general conclusions, including verification of their validity.

- 1. Subject and function of the methodology of science; the development of views on scientific knowledge. 2. Science, scientists, language of science, paradigms. 3. Specificity of social sciences. 4. Theory and empiricism; basic and applied research. 5. Methods of scientific work; inductive logic and its methodological significance. 6. The meaning and importance of formalization in science and its means. 7. Information sources; citation ethics, compilation, paraphrase. 8. Research data, data collection techniques, data processing methods. 9. Theory of evidence and proving; verification and falsification in science. 10. Systematicity in solving scientific problems; system analysis and synthesis, system thinking. 11. Determination and testing of research hypotheses; research questions. 12. Explanation and prediction; science experiment.
